Artist Notes
I really enjoyed the entire process of creating these illustrations, It allowed me the opportunity to work with a ton of interesting textures – from the rough outer peel of the orange to the smooth, wet surface of the popsicles.
The Process
Procreate App on iPad Pro 9.7″
Each object began as a rough sketch, outlined with a simple sketch brush in Procreate. Once I was satisfied with the overall shape, I created another layer and began blocking out the shape using the main color as a base. Then the sketch layer was moved back to the top and opacity was set to around 10%.
Alpha lock was enabled on the color block layer to ensure the overall shape stayed the same. Then I used a variety of mono, sketch, and watercolor brushes to add additional color and details, blending and adjusting as needed. Finally, I used a custom semi-transparent watercolor brush with a screen blend mode to add the highlights and a separate watercolor brush with a multiply blend to add the shadows.
