Seriously, I made a tremendous mistake and now I am kicking myself for it.

You know that I have been feeling extremely overwhelmed with React / Redux and simultaneously got really burnt out over this last week or so. So much so that I ended up limiting myself to one hour a day for the past two days. Yeah, that wasn’t my mistake.

I’m actually feeling a lot better, by the way.

Tutorial hopping was a horrible decision.

My mistake was thinking that I would learn React / Redux better if I jumped around to different tutorials. Even the past few days, that’s literally all I have done. I watch one video, then move on to the next. Then that one confuses me so much, I end up watching another. The cycle continues.

Then this morning, amid all the tutorial hopping, I discovered this article – ‘Beginner’s guide to react/redux — how to start learning and not be overwhelmed‘.

I only got to the first step when I had my major “aha!” moment and realized what a mistake I’ve been making this past week.

You see, it was perfectly fine when it was just about the basics like HTML, CSS, and Vanilla JavaScript. That’s because these are kind of the classic ‘start here’ languages so there is really only one way to do things. Now, I’m saying that in a very broad sense. I know there are a billion ways to do things in JavaScript (heck, I even wrote a post about it!) BUT the basics are really all the same, no matter who you ask.

Once you get into frameworks and libraries, however, everyone has their own opinion about what to do and what the best approach to take might be. Even the tools are different!

You can argue that the basics are still the same. A component is a component. A store is a store. Blah, blah, blah. This is true and I completely agree with you. However, after a little while, it all starts to sound like everyone is speaking in another language entirely and there’s no way you’ll ever understand what they are saying.

My New Approach

No more tutorial hopping!

In fact, I decided to completely ignore video tutorials for a while and just stick with Free Code Camp, the official documentation, and the books that I’ve found on React and Redux, which will mostly serve as a supplementary resource for things I don’t understand.

I honestly feel a bit less overwhelmed already. In fact, I was able to get myself together and complete a few of the FCC React and Redux challenges. Granted, I only got the first few done and they were just about React (which I am OK with).

I am going to do a little Redux reading later tonight. Then tomorrow, I will move on to the rest of those challenges and see if I still feel the same way. Something tells me I’ll be okay.

Quick Update About My Self-Care Challenges

Someone was wondering if I’d already given up on the self-care challenges I promised, because I haven’t posted any updates on here. The answer is no. Sorry I haven’t posted any updates. I’ve been posting my gratitude challenge on Instagram stories and everything else has been share on my Instagram feed. One of the challenges (the Happy Lettering Challenge) is being shared on the Color My Life Instagram feed as I decided to use the colors from each days’ color palette and thought it would be a nice addition over there.

If you want to see what I’ve posted on Instagram recently (but don’t want to go on there), just scroll down to the bottom of my page. You won’t be able to see my stories, but you can at least see the lettering challenges and things like that. ❤[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
